Weekly Contemplative Worship Services Wednesday evenings

We will start with a light meal at 6:15 in the Fellowship Hall and then hold the service at 7:00 in the Chapel. Attending the dinner is optional, but be sure to come in plenty of time in order to get a parking space, as other organizations use the church on Wednesday nights.

Contemplative worship is a brief service, with plenty of silence and weekly communion.

Two suggested prompts:.

1. Mix up your genres! If you are writing prose, try adding a segment of poetry into the prose or, vice versa, if you are writing a poem, consider adding in a little prose section.

2. Add social and/or historical context to a personal reflection. What was happening in the larger world during a time that something significant was happening in your life? Movies? Political events?

Natural phenomenon, disasters? Advertising jingles? Celebrity weddings? Adding such details can reveal a lot to the reader about the world in which you were living and having your own experiences.

Contact Elizabeth for writing samples from Michael Ondaatje's Running in the Family.

Lunch and Book Discussion

Aging as a Spiritual Practice

The inevitability of aging, and entering new phases of life, is something

that every person faces. Over the course of the next year, Rev. Jim and Rev. Elizabeth will be leading conversations that come out of the book “Aging as a Spiritual Practice”. These discussions will be held over the lunch hour (on a weekday once a month, starting in September), and also another time (TBD).

There are several copies of the book in the church library that you can buy, or pick one up on your favorite device. And sessions will be designed so you can participate even if you haven’t read.
Please bring $5 for the lunch.

Back Bay Missioin Trip Shareholders Lunch

Thank You!!!

Because of your generosity, 9 representatives of Orinda Community Church traveled to Biloxi, MS to work with the United Church of Christ's Gulf Coast agency: Back Bay Mission.

While there, we worked on construction projects, served at a soup kitchen, helped in a food pantry, hosted a food bank, and learned a great deal about poverty, service, and the call to live lives that make a difference.

Now we want to say thank you!

For all of you who bought stock in us, and invested in this experience, we hope you can join us for a time of food, pics, sharing experiences, and a little gift giving.

If you were unable to purchase stock the first time around, you still have a chance! Donation is $25/share, and if you purchase $100 or more, you are entered in the raffle to win great prizes!!

What: New Orleans Fare and Stories of our trip to Biloxi, MS

When: Sunday, September 15, Noon

Where: Orinda Community Church, Fellowship Hall

Care/Parish Team

Care/Parish Team

One of the main things a church community does is care for one another. Our hope is to create ways for us to be better at doing just that. Over the years, we have had Parish Callers, Care Teams, and countless acts of care that are not under the umbrella of either.

All are invited to join Rev. Jim, Rev. Elizabeth, and Leslie for a light lunch, and a time of figuring out how O.C.C. can develop a better system for Congregational Care. We hope to create a sort of "Parish Care Team" - and would love your help and input.

If you have ideas or interest in how we can care for each other in the O.C.C. community, please join us. RSVP to Rev. Jim so we know how much food to provided.

Green Team Forum/lunch

The Green Team and the Mercy & Justice Ministry will be hosting a Second Hour on April 7th following worship. Everyone is invited to Fellowship Hall for a light lunch followed by an information and workshop program on OCC’s new Recycling Policy. With this policy, the Green Team wants to involve everyone who comes to the church – members, renters, and visitors – in proper and appropriate recycling. The policy commits the Orinda Community Church and its users to a program of reducing waste. The results will be larger and cleaner quantities of recycling, larger quantities of composting, and smaller quantities of landfill waste. Come to learn the difference between Blue, Green and Black.

There will be handouts available with suggestions on recycling, reducing our personal use of plastic materials and the New Green Deal. In the coming weeks there will be informational handouts available in the Narthex about recycling, climate change, the Green New Deal, and other environmental concerns.

Please let Nancy Thursby (nlthursby@comcast.net), Gail Mead (grmead@comcast.net) or Nancy Peterson (nancyptrsn@yahoo.com) know if you plan to attend the luncheon just to get a rough estimate for food quantity. There is no cost, but a donation would be graciously accepted.

The core issues represented in this journey are broken down into these categories: fossil fuels, methane gas, palm oil, geopolitical landscape and the U.S. political landscape."
